What to Do When Something Is Wrong Outside Our Hours

It helps to know the plan before you need it. Rose-Rich in Richmond handles urgent situations differently depending on whether the clinic is open, and having the right numbers saved ahead of time takes one thing off your plate on a day that already has enough going on.

During the day: same day care

If your pet needs to be seen the same day and it was not already on the schedule, Rose-Rich will work an urgent case in ahead of the day's appointments. That comes with an additional charge of $65.00 on top of the regular visit cost, which covers being seen out of turn rather than waiting for the next open slot. Rose-Rich also takes sick or injured pets as a drop off rather than a same day appointment, which can be the faster option on a busy morning. A drop off form needs to be filled out completely when you arrive, covering what is going on and how to reach you during the day, and a vet works your pet in between scheduled appointments rather than at a fixed time. One exception: a newly adopted shelter pet, or a pet whose vaccination status is unknown, needs to come in as a full exam appointment rather than a drop off, since that first visit involves more than a quick check.

If a pet needs to stay for observation or treatment after being seen, Rose-Rich's hospitalization area has an oxygen therapy unit, IV pumps, and the other equipment a post-surgical or seriously ill patient needs, all on site rather than requiring a transfer elsewhere for that level of care during the day.

After we close

Outside of Rose-Rich's own hours, the clinic refers patients to Sugar Land Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center, a dedicated emergency facility at 1515 Lake Pointe Parkway. Their number is (281) 491-7800. It is a separate practice from Rose-Rich, built specifically to handle overnight and weekend emergencies, and it is the right call any time something comes up after Rose-Rich has closed for the day.

If it might be poison

For a suspected poisoning at any hour, day or night, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is available around the clock at 1-888-4-ANI-HELP. They are staffed to talk you through what to do right then, whatever time it is, and they can also coordinate directly with whichever vet ends up seeing your pet.

What to have ready when you call

Whoever you end up calling, a few things speed the call along. Your pet's name, species, and approximate weight. What happened and roughly when. Any medication your pet is currently on. And as clear a description as you can manage of what you are seeing right now, since that is what the person on the phone will use to figure out next steps with you. It also helps to know ahead of time that a deposit may be requested for a new client's sick visit, and for extended hospitalization or emergency treatment generally. Rose-Rich accepts cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and CareCredit, and the office can help complete pet insurance paperwork if your pet is covered. Having a payment method sorted before you arrive means one less thing to think about while you are focused on your pet.
